What an uplifting and amazing experience!
I was met at LA Mission by the vivacious and energetic Sheila who has been working with the mission for over 11 years! She put me to work straight away dicing tomatoes in preparation for the evening meal.
With tomatoes done, Ivan Klassen (Director of Community partnerships who has been here since 2007) took me on a tour of the whole facility, it’s impressive, they have thought of everything… and they are just such a kind and giving bunch of humans!
The panoramic photo is of one of their new projects where they’re growing plants and herbs for their salad bar and it’s grown using this really cool new technology! The plan is to have over 100 of these plant ‘boxes’ on the roof, I even met the gorgeous gardener who tends to the plants so caringly! The stunning murals and colours are inspired by local community artists.
Along the tour I visited the chapel, laundry (it’s bigger than some hotel’s!), dormitory style accommodation, training and counselling facilities, as well as the recreational room, gym and much more!
I was so thrilled that Ivan blessed me with so much of his time.
Tina Russek (Gift-in-Kind Manager) showed me around her department, this amazing Liza Minnelli look alike has been with the mission for over 20 years!
Back to the kitchen with the head chef (who has also been here for over 20 years!) to finish prep for the evening meal… I have never cut so many onions and capsicums in my life!!
I am so appreciative to everyone (Simon from American Airlines, and everyone from LA Mission) who made this experience possible.
I would highly recommend anyone spending time in LA to include this as part of their agenda.
